I OWE YOUR NOTHING

2022 - Thesis Work

My peers and I were tasked with creating an exhibit for our thesis for the spring. Which gave me the opportunity to combine my visual exploration and research into one piece.

This was the largest canvas I used by this point and I was a little intimidated.

Writing is one of the hardest parts of my practice. But knew the text would tie everything together.

Process

I use collage very often because I like the act of layering different pieces together to make one piece.  It helps engage my mind in a way that other practices don’t. Readjusting and planning things out to make sure the composition is just how I like was an integral part of making this piece.

Artist Statement

With my installation I wanted to illustrate the fluidity that comes with the people we idolize on paper. We put athletes like Colin Kapernike, Serena Williams, and Tiger Woods onto pedestals but they are flawed and incredibly human. We don't get to see the work that goes into their performances, we only see the final product. When in reality they have their own needs and goals that don’t always align with ours. That is okay. The fluid nature of the ink helps translate the complexity that comes with our icons. While the thread reinforces the fact that athletes can be this “bigger than life” figure and also use their influence to fight for what they believe in. They owe us nothing.
